Preface

An Encyclopaedic Dictionary of Indian Constitution is the seventh volume in the ongoing series 'An Encyclopaedic Dictionary of Indian History and Culture'.

The Constitution of a country refers to the system of fundamental laws and principles of government. It may be written as in the case of the United States of America. It may also be unwritten like that of Great Britain.

The Indian Constitution consists of 395 articles and a number of schedules. It incorporates fundamental rights, duties and directives of state policy, structure of the Union and state governments. It is Republican and Federal in character and has been amended more than eighty times during the five decades of its operation.

The present volume is divided into three sections:

(i) Nature and operation;

(ii) The Dictionary; and

(iii) The Miscellaneous.

Section One explains the nature and operation of the Indian constitution through four chapters. The section enumerates important articles of the constitution, explains the nature of Indian polity, outlines the judicial system and gives a resume of the amendments to the original law of the land.

Section Two comprises the main body of the volume. It contains definitions and descriptions of about four hundred Constitutional and Parliamentary terms. While describing the various terms, the practices in other major constitutional systems of the world-particularly the British and Commonwealth countries-have been listed.
