About the Author

Abdul Rahman a former Professor of Tamil, was presented the Sahitya Akademi award in 1999 for his collection of poems Alapana, He is popularly known as "Kaviko'. His Palveedhi and Neyar Viruppam are path breaking poetry collections which heralded the new verse movement in Tamil. The 42 poems in Elucidations (Alapanai) work present some of the striking paradoxes of life in rich and impressive imagery. Some of his powerful metaphors, with their universal import, linger for long. He is one of the pioneers of modern Tamil poetry movement launched in the 1970s. He commands avid listeners at poetry sessions conducted by literary bodies.
Dr. R. Natarajan a bilingual author of over 25 books has won several awards for his media and literary contribution in English and Tamil. He has been Principal and Professor of English of an Arts College. Now a Member, Tamil Advisory Board of the Sahitya Akademi, he lent his expertise to some of the Akademi's projects. He has also translated into English Naa. Parthasarathy's award-winning Tamil novel Samudaya Veedhi(Snowberry Street). Dr. Natarjan has captured the sprit of the original with his vivacious style of this translation.

Preface

Within me are two, a bard and a loon. The bard expounds tunes sans phonemes.
The loon swims crosscurrents, the river is not made of waters.
The bard relishes the straight, the loon leans to the curves.
The two do not get along, they are at poles.
The bard who perceives the bright side of truth darts through it; starry dust all over him.
The loon looks at the dark side of truth.
He whiffs its mysterious blooms; his wings are laden with the pollen of darkness.
