Book Description
About the Book
The Book tries to analyse, interpret and document the exis sing land use keeping in view the ecological perspective of a very sensitive ecological region-the Nilgiris-Wynad which again forms the Gudalur Taluk of Nilgiri Dis- trict, Tamilnadu. It has dealt two very important human activities of the region-the traditional agricul- ture and contemporary agriculture/ plantation agriculture. The book has six chapters. The first chapter deals with various ecological con- ditions-physiography, drainage, flora and fauna, Climate along with traditional agricultural system forms the fourth chapter. The second chapter deals with the. people of the region. Emphasis has been given to understand the ethnic character of the population because each and every human society tries to muster the environ- mental resources according to their specific cultural knowledge and belief. The third chapter deals with the changing/existing landuse pattern of the taluk. The fourth and fifth chapters deal with tradi tional agricultural system and con- temporary agricultural system/ plantation agricultural system respectively. These two systems are the results of organised human octivities in the region controlled and supported by the ecosystem. The last chapter deals with change which has occurred on the physical and cultural landscape of the region.

This understanding of the complexity of man environment relationship with reference to changing landuse pattern draw its. sustenance from the author's geo- graphical field research in the region for nearly six months spreading in between 1979, 1980 and 1981. However an important aim of this book is to provide an understanding of the changing en- vironment scenario of the region.
