"Who says dreams can't become reality? Envision them, work tirelessly, and watch them come to life." This sentiment resonates deeply with me, as I have experienced it firsthand. The inception of this book is a testament to this truth. I vividly recall a day five years ago, in 2019, when I was pursuing my MD in Dravyaguna Vigyan at the prestigious All India Institute of Ayurveda, New Delhi.
It was there that I dreamt of authoring a book on the subject of Dravyaguna and began by creating a standard template and compiling a table with detailed information about various plants. The foundational idea was to write a comprehensive guide that consolidates all pertinent details of these plants in one place. This included everything from their Nirukti (etymology) to classifications from the Brihattrayi (Charaka, Sushruta, and Vagbhatta) and various Nighantus, such as Agrya Sangraha and Dravya Sangraha, along with relevant modern information.
Since that very first day, up until a few months ago, this book has undergone numerous iterations. The content has been refined, new ideas and approaches have been incorporated, and countless revisions have been made to ensure its usefulness. Each modification and addition has been driven by the desire to create a comprehensive and valuable guide for students, practitioners, and enthusiasts of Ayurveda.
I can vividly recall the countless days and nights spent tirelessly expanding the content, page by page. I diligently captured photos of some plants and herbs with my phone wherever I went, using them as references for examples and identification in the book. The full-fledged work began when I joined an Ayurveda Medical College as an Assistant Professor of Dravyaguna, fully dedicating myself to teaching and writing. Over the course of two and a half years, I poured my heart into this dream project, making numerous revisions and updates to bring the writing to completion.
Upon completion, in my search for a suitable publisher, I had the fortune of meeting Mr. Neeraj Gupta from Chaukhamba Surbharti Prakashan, Varanasi, UP. I presented the book to him, and after extensive discussions, we reached an agreement to proceed with the project. One notable quality of Mr. Neeraj Gupta is his meticulous approach-he doesn't easily commit to a project, but once convinced, he wholeheartedly dedicates himself to achieving near-perfection.
