Twenty years have rolled by since the 26th of December, 1980, when Ustad Chand Khan, doyen of the Delhi Gharana of Hindustani Music, passed away after a long and fruitful life. Khan Sahib was not only one of the foremost vocalists of his time, he was also an excellent teacher. He trained in both vocal and instrumental music. The numerous disciples - some of them quite famous that he produced affirm the statement that he revived the Delhi Gharana of vocal music.
Apart from the performing side, another facet of his life was his interest in musical literature. He used to burn the midnight oil, reading and writing. He wrote a number of books, and several musical compositions, which are current in the Gharana.
Khan Sahib had the interesting habit of maintaining his daily diary. The diary has been the source of most of the information in this volume, but we have drawn upon the relevant news items of those times also. Besides, there are some rare photographs, which speak for themselves.
Our thanks are due to Shri Sharif and Dr. (Mrs.) Nayan Bharti, to Ustad Iqbal Ahmed Khan, Dr.Neeta Mathur, Dr.Asita Jain, and Miya Parvez Ahmed for providing either source material, or translating, or reducing recorded matter to writing or notations.
It gives us immense pleasure to place this commemorative volume in our readers' hands with the hope that it will make interesting as well as inspiring reading, and thus perpetuate the memory of a noble soul.
