Preface

During the period of Nawab Sikander Jah, the III Nizam of Hyderabad his benevoient Prime Minister Raja Chandulal patrozed literary activity, particularly Urdu. His residential palace was popular meeting place of all scholars, Ulema, Musicians, Dancers and also the noted Hakeems of the period. He is known for his extravaganza in encouraging the above people.

Dewan-e-Hafeez is a poetic version an of ghazals in versatile Urdu Dr. Mirza Abkar Ali Baig, Prof. of Urdu in Osmania University has undertaken the laborious task of editing different versions of the text and presisely presented to the scholars, along with an introduction in English for the benefit of readers. There is no doubt that the present edition is an indepth study of the style, lyrical beauty and the cultural ethos in its flowery composition. By doing so, he has maintained a distinct style of pure Urdu literature as patronized during the early part of amperiod.

Introduction

Shekh Mohd. Hafeez Name and Hafeez Takhalus (Pan name) was bom in Delhi. He was a great Urdu poet and well known in Delhi and Hyderabad as well. Very few anthologists mentioned about Hafeez in their Tazkiras (Biographies). After the down fall of Mughal empire Hafeez left Delhi and reached Aurangabad, which was a literary centre in those days. Subedar (Collector) Mahpat Ram was a patron of poets and writers. When Hafeez apporached him, Mahpat Ram offered him a job and made him the poet of his court. Hafeez enjoyed a lot in Aurangabad.

Due to conspiracy Mahpat Ram lost his job. Hafeez suffered a lot and proceeded to Hyderabad. At that time Sikander Jah was the Nizam III and Maharaja Chandulal Shadan was the Prime Minister of Hyderabad, who was a patron of poets. He himself was also a poet. Hafeez approached the Maharaja. Maharaja Chandulal offered him a job with a monthly salary of Rs. 1,000/- Не introduced Hafeez to the Nizam III Sikander Jah. Hafeez came to Hyderabad in 1219 Hijra/1805 A.D. Maharja Chandulal Shadan offered Hafeez the title of Malikushshura (Poet lourate). Hafeez wrote several poems in praise of Maharaja Chandulal Shadan, and was very close to Maharaja. He used to recommend poor students and poor persons for the grant of scholarship and pensions. Maharaja was great admirer of Hafeez Hafeez was quite happy in Hyderabad. No doubt he enjoyed the We here.

Eminent poets like Shah Naseer Dahalvi, Mirza Ali Lutf, Bayan, Imam, Safa, were here, they were attached to Maharaja Chandulal Shadan. Hafeez was very close to Mirza Ali Lutf Whenever he used to write some Gazals he used to show it to Ali Lutf Shamsul Ulama Mohd. Hussain Azad in his book 'Ab-e-Hayat addressed, Hafeez as 'Shaikh-e-Deccan'. Hafeez was admirer... of Meer Taqi Meer. He wrote several verses in praise of Meer. During my research I found (6) more poets by name Hafeez. Shaikh Hafeez was a good poet. He used to encourage young poets too. He died in Hyderabad in 1247 Hijra (1830 A.D.) and was burried in Dairah Meer Momin (Sultan Sahi).
