In the time honored and revered tradition of Hindu Scriptures we come across a vivid description of a mythological episode in which the Gods of creation and sustenance of the universe, Brahma and Vishnu, got embroiled in an aggressive confrontation with each other, trying to fight it out to prove who was the superior of the two. Suddenly there manifested between them, a towering pillar of flaming light, which neither of them could identify. They agreed to use that as the decider of their personal conflict. Whoever finds out first the origin of the pillar would be accepted as the superior. Vishnu dived downwards to the root of the light while Brahma soared high towards its top. After prolonged futile search, they returned, tired and humbled enough to accept that the radiance had no beginning or end. And then, to know what it actually was, they, with hearts filled with faith and melting in love, prayed to the light which revealed itself as the Supreme Soul, the source of all power and perception.
Local traditions of Tiruvannamalai believe the above cosmic incident materialized itself as the mountain worshipped there till today as Arunachala Shiva. The author of this book has been living for years under the shade of this mountain, conducting his intellectual experiments and spiritual Sadhana in the light of Bhagavan Shri Ramana Maharshi's teaching. It is not surprising that Shri Dwaraknath's journey is assuming the same pattern as that of Brahma and Vishnu. This particular book of his gives us ample proof of his faith and devotion.
A river cannot flow unless it be which is a bounded by steadfast banks. Flow of thoughts, needs the support or at least the solace of a secure substratum, or else it will perish in its own strife and struggle. Surely there has to be a spring from which the stream emerges, an energy behind the rising tide, a changeless Primal Entity as the cause of creation? I need the concept as my conviction, and I need a word for it. I assert it is beyond my mind, and yet hold it firmly within my mind. A contradiction? Never mind (oh mind), the support- system works and delivers.
That word is God. This language has settled through usage this sound-symbol, GOD. Several languages of varied societies of different times and climes have adopted their own sound- symbols. All of them inhere the same aspiration and serve the same inalienable need of humanity. God is, and for ever. He knows, everything. He has the power, and will respond, when called. He is merciful, and I am entitled to His mercy. Now I can go on with my life, the security-net is in place.
And then to some, somehow, sometime, somewhere, it comes to pass that all aspects and aspirations and attainments that life may offer, become subordinate to the urge to resolve the God- concept in more personal intimate terms. The pre-eminence of consciousness for the affirmation of the very existence of cosmos, man, and god, emerges as the core-functionality of both creation and creator.
