Book Description

Foreword

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) brings out diverse kinds of teaching-learning materials with a view to bring about qualitative improvement in school education. The Trilingual Dictionary of Sociology (English-Hindi-Urdu) for the students of Higher Secondary reflects its efforts in this direction. The Dictionary contains a total of 216 terms used in sociology textbooks (Classes XI and XII) of the NCERT as well as certain other relevant and popularly used concepts.

Sociology is offered as an elective subject in Classes XI and XII. The students often face difficulties in understanding certain terms and concepts as they study the subject for the first time in these classes. The students may be familiar with a term but are unable to explain the same. Efforts have been made to facilitate learning in Sociology with the help of this trilingual dictionary. Each term and its explanation has been given in three languages (English, Hindi and Urdu) together, so that students can refer to any version with whichever she/he is comfortable and can also find out its explanation in the other two languages. The terms have been arranged in English alphabetical order. Hindi and Urdu terms may be located with the help of index given at the end.

It is expected that this Dictionary will be useful to all those who are engaged in the teaching and learning of sociology in any of the three languages (English, Hindi and Urdu). The members of the Dictionary Development Committee and the Department of Education in Social Sciences of NCERT deserve appreciation for preparing learner-friendly material of this kind for the first time. NCERT looks forward to receiving comments and for bringing out further improvement in the dictionary.

Introduction

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) is the first institution in India which introduced Sociology at school level. It was introduced as an elective subject at higher secondary stage and requires appropriate pedagogical support for effective teaching learning. Sociology is a discipline closed linked with society. It is a subject in which no one starts from zero as everyone already knows something about society.

The Department of Education in Social Sciences (DESS), which brings out sociology textbooks took the initiative to prepare this Trilingual Dictionary of Sociology for Schools. While preparing this important curricular material, we kept in view the requirement of first learners of sociology. This dictionary can help students to go beyond textbooks and develop basic understanding of many sociological terms. Sociology has a well developed social science in India and hundreds and thousands of terms are used in this discipline. Yet, this dictionary contains only a few important terms which are commonly used in school sociology textbooks and meant for learners in the age group of 15 to 18 years.

All the entries in this dictionary are arranged in alphabetically in English. It also has some sub-entries. They have been presented as sub-entries under the main entry. It is said, a picture worth thousand words. Some terms are also presented with illustrations. You can locate Hindi and Urdu terms with the help of indexes given at the end, separately for Hindi and Urdu.

Preparing this dictionary has been an exciting and challenging task for us. We are aware that the worth of a curricular material depends on how well it is used by the students and teachers. We look forward your feedback and suggestions as they will go a long way in improving this dictionary.
