The present work is based on my continuous research of 40 years. It aims at providing a dialect geographical study of one of the three dialects of Eastern Hindi.
Hindi, the other two being Awadhi and Chhattisgarhi. As its name implies, Bagheli is the language of the former Baghelkhand, now a region of Madhya Pradesh. Another name given to Bagheli by some scholars is 'Riwari' or 'Rimhai', after the name of the principal state, i.e. Rewa State. Bagheli bacame the 'court language' of the Rewa State in 1854 and its 'official language' in 1895 and enjoyed this position till the 1930s.
It has been clear that some of the most striking differences between cultivated and popular Hindi speech are found in Baghelkhand.
