In 'Ashtang Yoga' Patanjali has discussed about eight formulae pertaining to Yoga, out of which the first five are the initial the 'external' divisions, such as.
1. 'Yama' (Pattern of Social Behaviour)
2. 'Niyama' (Duties)
3. 'Asana' (Physical Postures)
4. Pranayama (control and regulation of breath)
5. Pratayahar (withdrawal or repression of senses)
Remaining last three parts being 'Dharna', 'Dhyana' and 'Samadhi' which are the internal facets of yoga, which constitute a fundamental and internal ground. These expression imply receptive power of mind, 'meditation' and 'meditative' Trance respectively.
For common people 'Ashtanga Yoga' and its practice is considered as an uphill task, and for such people various other (similar) methods have been suggested by different schools of thought and sects for meditation. Even lord Krishna has himself sugested various methods to practise yoga for different types of people.
Dayanand Verma, the author of this book, has been the Editor of the magazine, 'Prakashitmn', which is a spiritual, and cultural magazine. Prior to it the author has written and published many books and written hundreds of articles which were published in various magazines and papers. He was decorated with the title of "YogaRatna" in 1986 at "VishwaYoga" con.erence. In tension-ridden modern times, Dhyan is like a priceless remedy. So many 'Sadhanas' of 'Dhyan-Yoga' are prevalent these days, but only those processes of Dhyan Yoga have been explained which can be practised by men and women of any age-group, even while they are discharging their duties towards their homes, and society.
So, open the book and turn its pages, pick up any of them, which suits your tendency, so as to keep your body and mind healthy and cheerful.
