Indian Civilization is old. Some even consider it as the fountainhead of all civilizations of the world, about which the celebrated American author Mark Twain has pointed out in his travelogue after the world tour during 1895-96. He spent three months out of his fourteen months journey to get a first-hand account of the extensive Oriental wisdom.

According to Indian cosmology, a kalpa consists of four- teen manavantaras, each with seventy- one Yugas of 12,000 years. At present we are living in the 28th of Yuga of the 7th manavantara. Every Yuga sees pralaya (deluge) and srști (creation). There is no equivalent day of reckoning like other biblical religions in Hindu cosmology or mythol- ogy. This makes human civilization about 5,448,000 years old, which is in the range of around 2 million years sup- ported by modern scientific calculations.
