During my University education, I had once come upon a text named Dharma-sangraha which I used to find very helpful. In that text dharma terms used to be given together with their relevant categories. For long, I had hoped to find its Tibetan translation in the Kagyur-Tangyur collections. To my disbelief, no translation of it was ever carried out into Tibetan. This inspired me with an idea of working on a similar text, but with parallel Tibetan and Sanskrit versions In order to make the text authentic, I decided to collect the data only from original Sanskrit texts and their respective Tibetan translations, not make up my own. Later when I got an opportunity to work on the Tibetan- Sanskrit Dictionary at the Institute, I was able to add considerably to the collection. Though my initial plan was to make the work much more comprehensive than it is now and pay serious attention to giving critical comments wherever it deemed necessary, for which there simply is too much room, constraints of time do not allow me to do this. If I still persisted, this would delay the work for too long. So it was decided to publish the work in its present form, with whatever data I have been able to gather to date, for the benefit of the readers.

I first found it difficult to give an appropriate title to this work. After considerable discussion with both the traditional and modern scholars it was decided to name it 'Dharma-sangraha-kosha' (A Dictionary of the dharma words).

The term Dharma is used here to mean any word that suggests category or classification. For the present volume, Dharma terms have been supplied mainly from Buddhist schools of sciences like Abhidharma, Vinaya, Tantra, Ayurvijnana Jyotish, etc. Non-Buddhist terms have also been incorporated insofar as they appear in Sanskrit works which have been fully translated into Tibetan Language.
