Foreword

The erstwhile princely State of Mysore is a fascinating subject of study. It had the enviable record of being called a Model State'. it established for itself some important traditions traditions which moulded its development even after independence. From a political perspective the evolution of the legislature in the princely State of Mysore is a most important landmark At a time when freedom was at best a distant vision and political participation regarded as an aberration this small compact State took what was a giant leap by establishing in 1881 the Representative Assembly. It is all too easy to wear modern spectacles and brand the Representative Assembly as a well meaning but ineffectual debating society. However, a hinder appreciation can be made only when it is set against a contemporary background.
