Book Description
About the Book
(Delhi, a city select of the world where the elite of the times lived; it has been robbed and destroyed by circumstances. I belong to that desolated city.)

Delhi has been ruled and ruined, loved and lusted, lost and found by so many of its rulers and inhabitants; yet Delhi survives it all.

Delhi: A History is a historical portrait of a city whose past has reference in mythology and whose present is rooted in modernity. A city destroyed and populated by events of history, Delhi's journey has been unparalleled when compared with other ancient cities of the world.

This book aims to give the reader a glimpse into the general history of the city of Delhi, and attempts to weave together diverse histories into a single story. Laced with historical findings and archaeological excavations, this book will bring to its readers a history of Delhi with utmost simplicity and honesty.

Preface
The American historian, Charles Beard, employed the expression "That Noble Dream' to refer to the disposition amongst historians to seek 'the objective truth' about the past, and pursue that account of history which would retail perfectly historical events as they actually happened, and be devoid of the historian's own predilections and biases. With this noble dream, he wanted to make a convincing case for the relativity of historical knowledge.

This book aims to provide the reader a glimpse into the general history of Delhi, and attempts to bring together the diverse histories of the city into a major narrative along with an understanding of the discipline. Major interests, politics of the times, economy and social aspects have all been highlighted within a framework of the time, space and knowledge of their occurrences. The purpose behind this effort is to make the reader aware that history aims to explore and understand past processes in the light of changing times and expanding spaces.

Introduction
The history of Delhi is unlike the histories of many capital cities such as Baghdad, Cairo and Istanbul. This is because Delhi has seen many rulers and feudatory disputes, especially due to its geographical location along the river Yamuna, whose tributaries were supplying water to various settlements and their activities. Today, Delhi is a cosmopolitan city where people from all walks of life aspire to visit and reside in.

This work is an attempt to write a general history of a city where I have lived for long and one that has groomed me in many ways. Many a time, my own experiences with the city, its monuments and its people have shaped the desire to understand, and hence write about the city. Many of the sections that discuss the behaviour of its inhabitants, as well as its monuments and markets, are my own experiences. I share these with complete consciousness and anyone who holds a contrary viewpoint has the right to discard it totally.

I trust that the material collected and presented here will be of interest to the reader, and will be of instructive value in the discipline of history. Archaeological and historical evidences and information are used to arrive at authenticity of events.
