Book Description

Foreword

Death is a mystery which sooner or later touches us all. It is a fundamental experience from which no-one escapes. When it affects us personally our hearts and souls are deeply stirred and our minds turn naturally to pondering on what has happened to our loved ones. Where have they gone? Is there life after death? Shall we see them again'? Will their sins (and therefore in due course our own) be forgiven? and so on. The Writings of Baha'u'llah and 'Abdu'l-Baha give comfort to the bereaved and assurance that we shall be reunited with those whom we have loved on earth-who have but passed to a higher plane. They also give us faith in the boundless mercy of God.

The occasion of losing a loved one can be a beautiful and enriching experience, increasing faith. It can also be quite the opposite, especially if the one we have lost is a child or young person seemingly cut off in the prime of life for no apparent reason. 'Abdu'l-Baha's explanations of such tragic occurrences help us to understand them better and bear them with courage and faith. Indeed, the subject of life in the next world is dealt with as fully in the Baha'i Writings as we are capable of understanding in our mortal and finite condition. The emphasis is on death as a "messenger of joy" rather than as the bringer of sadness.
