Commentaries and Digests, apart from being the compendia of the vast Dharma Sastric literature, are the repository of values which have molded the Indian society. While reflecting cultural and philosophical outlook of ancient India they not only provide mechanism for meeting the ever changing socio-politico-economic needs of the society but also for augmenting the preferred values. The twentieth century interest in the Shastric literature is understandable, particularly in the prevailing context of departure from traditional values and lack of definition of the emerging values. But it is regrettable that Western scholars have tried to learn classical Sanskrit to understand and appreciate our ancient works, we ours Ayes are neglecting the study of the great classical language. The result is our lack of understanding of our own society.

In this context. Professor Shastri's attempt to publish JIMOOTVAHANA'S work in simple Sanskrit language with brief annotations in Hindi in the preface is laudable. The book will not only fill a gap in our understanding but will be of immense benefit to students pursuing a course of Dharmashastra or Ancient Hindu Law wherever they are taught. Professor Shastri, with his command over classical Sanskrit, modern simple Sanskrit and Hindi languages as well as his. Scholarship is eminently fitted to write the present Commentary.
