Spiritual Gems, first published in 1958, contains letters written by the Great Master to satsangis and seekers in America, Europe and South Africa, from 1919 to 1948. The present volume, The Dawn of Light, contains excerpts from letters written to satsangis and seekers in America, from 1911 to 1934. These letters were written mainly to Dr. Harold M. Brock and his wife, Genevieve, who were the first seekers to be initiated in America and later become the first representatives of the Great Master there. A few of the replies were addressed to seekers in America, and some to other disciples.
These letters have recently been brought to light by satsangis in America. The Dera publications division felt that the letters should be printed in book form and made widely available to satsangis and seekers in the East and the West.
Some letters are very lengthy and contain many different subjects, in reply to the queries raised by the satsangis and seekers in their letters to the Great Master. The long replies were necessary in order to cover all aspects of their queries. Written with compassion and understanding, these letters reflect the Great Master’s deep love for his American disciples, who though physically far away from him were close to his heart. Each letter is punctuated with the Master’s concern for their welfare, his keen desire to explain the finer points of the path to them, to encourage and inspire them to attend to their meditation with loving earnestness.
For his American disciples, these letters formed the only physical link between them and their beloved Satguru. The letters were eagerly awaited, lovingly received, and cherished by them as the most treasured possession of their lives.
While preparing this book, which has its own significance as a picture of the beginning of Sant Mat in America, it was felt that a chapter giving the historical background of the growth of Sant Mat in America should be added. The research and some missing links were added by the Dera publications committee, in an effort to cover the beginning and growth of the Radha Soami faith in America in all its aspects.
A brief resume of the main features of Sant Mat, based on books by the Great Master, has also been included, so that the reader might get a better understanding of the letters. Our other books may be referred to for more detailed information on the teachings. A few footnotes have been added to the letters to show the similarity of thought in the Bible.
