Data Dayal was a pioneer of the Sant faith. He knew various Indian and foreign languages. But he chose Urdu for the promotion of the faith and the dissemination of his message and ideas. He brought out more than a dozen journals in Urdu. These journals among others include Zamana, Sadhu, and Gyani. He authored several books in Urdu. He wrote in almost every genre, both modern and traditional, and thus left behind a rich legacy of writings in both poetry and prose. He imparted new themes and dimensions to Urdu. The Chicago University conferred on him the degree of 'Doctor of Law' in 1899. The present monograph is an objective study of the mind and achievements of Data Dayal.
Mohammad Ansarullah, (b. 1936) the author, is a reputed scholar. He wrote his first research article for Nigar, a very reputed literary journal in fifties. Ansarullah owes his research and critical acumen to Qazi Abdul Wadood who was his mentor. Dr. Ansarullah has to his credit nearly 400 articles and 18 books. He is the recipient of the "Imtiaz-e-Mir" award. His book M'tmdudola Agha Mir was awarded the first prize by the West Bengal Urdu Academy.
