Dasarupaka of Dhananjaya is a treatise on dramaturgy. Ten types of stage plays are described in this work. Among these nåtaka and Prakarana are most important. A number of nátakas and prakaranas are composed in Sanskrit but there are no instances of the varieties. These must have been current when Dasarûpaka was composed and earlier. However, these seems to be no public response for such type or stage plays. Hence we find instances only for nåtaka and prakarana.
Dasarúpaka describes in detail all aspects of stage play. However no instances are mentioned for other types. Therefore a study of this is more academic than practical. In any case to known the features of all ten types of stage plays is useful to know the development of the art of stage play.
Keeping this in view we are publishing Dasarupaka on Dhananjaya with a commentary 'Avaloka' of Dharmika. Dr. L.S. Vadirajacharya has edited this volume. I record my appreciation of his labour.
