NARAYAN
Narayan the first Adivasi writer in Malayalam arrived on the literary scene with Kocharethi, a remark- able account of the life of the Malayaraya tribe in the hills of Central Kerala. He has published three more novels, , Ooralikkudi, Chengarum Kuttalum and Vannala, and two collections of short stories, Nissahayante Nilavili and Pelamarutha. Kocharethi won the Kerala Sahitya Akademi award in 1999. Narayan’s stories have been translated into several Indian languages and English. Translations of Kocharethi in various Indian languages are to be published by the Kendra Sahitya Akademi shortly. Narayan retired as postmaster from the De- partment of Posts and lives at Elamakkara in Kochi.

K M Sherrif writes in Malayalam and English and translates among Malayalam, English, Gujarati, Hindi and Tamil. His published works include Ekalavyas with Thumbs, a selection of Gujarati Dalit writing in English translation, Deseert Shadows, translation of Anand’s novel in Malayalam Marubhoomikal Undakunnathu, Re- verberations of Spring Thunder, a selection of political mod- ernist short fiction in Malayalam in English transla- tion and Kunhupathumma’s Tryst with Destiny, a study of RE Asher’s English translation of Vaikom Muhammed Basheer’s novel Ntuppooppakku Oranendarnnu. Sherrif lives in Kozhikode and is reader in Department of Stud- ies in English, University of Calicut.
