Book Description
From the Book:

Shopping

Cosmopolitan Mumbai is reflected at contemporary stores such as the Bombay Store, the Oberoi Shopping Arcade (don't be intimated by the luxurious hotel. The prices are competitive), the Cottage Industries Emporium, Cottage Industries Exposition, Trimourti Emporium, Shilpi Kendra, Handloom house, Contemporary Arts and Crafts, Yamini, Chetna, Fab India, Aavartan, Golden Thimble, Khadi Gramudyog. Modern department stores also self craft items.

The Maharashtra Small Scale Industrial Development Corporation (MSSIDC) has outlets promoting the crafts of Maharashtra called Trimourti Emporium functioning as the craft authority of the state, Trimourti officials can advise you on where to look for a particular item if it is not available with them. The Headquarters are in Mumbai but they have an outlet in New Delhi.

The National Handicrafts Expo is held every year between December and March at the Textile Mill Compound, Parel.

According to Puranic legend, the god Parshuram pushed back the sea along the Konkan coast to carve out the western boundary of Maharashtra. Bordered by Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Goa, it is a land of Industrious progressive people, proud of their rich cultural heritage, yet always ready to adapt and incorporate new ideas. This blend of the traditional and the modern is reflected in its crafts and textiles, as in all aspects of the life of Maharashtra. The earliest craft activity in this region, tools made of chert and jasper, can be traced to the middle palaeolithic age, nearly one hundred millennia ago.
