It is often said that any artist is seen in the conspicuous form, either by allowing his hair to grow, more than what the normal fashion is set by the time, or the typical beard and the dress to give a notion that the artist is somewhat different from the normal existence and way of life. Either an artist is a chain-smoker or he is not even aware of his existence or being. The artist's behavior is somewhat different. He either forgets the scheduled work or he is more involved in being highly evolved.
I have had an association with one of the best acclaimed artist of the current years in the person of Imroz. Perhaps you know him, I need not to emphasize more, but only I will add, he is a highly evolved man, doing his normal work in a normal way, without giving any true or false notion that he is superior, because he is considered the 'best' by a known genius in the person of Amrita Pritam. I cannot say, what his contribution for art is for I am not an art critic at all. I am interested in the religious philosophy and wants to know how religion can help a man to be in equipoise. I am interested more in learning the basic ethos of life.
I have spent the maximum of my time, from 1985 and onwards in seeing the jackets of Amrita's books prepared by Imroz, with his artistic dots and dashes, using mostly the black ink and some definite colours of his choice, to suit the psycho-physical consciousness of Amritaji.
Perhaps you know, he was Inderjit upto the year 1960 and then he was recognized by Amritaji into the human relationship of a true friend, and was named Imroz. He is Imroz now for all purposes. Imroz is a Persian word and the Persian lexicon gives its meaning as 'current' and the 'day Of today. Apparently, it seems a non-Indian name but I consider that Imroz is ever fragrant, over fresh, and everlasting. He is, more than Inderjit.
Inderjit was a Punjabi by character, but Imroz is all Indian.
Imroz does not drink, nor does he smoke. Imroz does not know what 'ego' is, nor is interested in knowing what the 'higher ego' is, as the artists are supposed to discuss, say or explain through the shades and tones of their brush and colour. Imroz does not contaminate himself with the colour of caste, religion and language. He sees the All-pervading spirit in the name of 'Bule-Shah', 'Sultan Bahu', 'Kabir', Waris Shah and other Sufi/devotional poets. Since he had never been to Kashmir, he has not come across the name of 'Laleshwari' or 'Lalded', therefore, his studio needs one plate of the graphic shape of this great poetess of Indian literature.
Lalded was a mystic poet and lived the higher standard of spirituality, but never lost the string with the common man. I think, Amritaji will endorse my view point, and would make a request to Imroz to write the name of 'Laleshwari' in artistic calligraphy.
