I started writing this book in Aug 2019, soon after completing my first fiction SPIES, LIES RED TAPE, and a couple of days after Articles 370 and 35A relating to J&K were abrogated. I had hoped to complete the book by Feb 2020, well before Narendra Modi completed the first year of his second term as PM of India.
Then came the Citizenship Amendment Act, followed by Covid-19, during which I penned 225 research-based articles on the pandemic in 200 days, which naturally took up a lot of my time. Before Covid-19 had even reached its peak, the border stand-off with China started in Eastern Ladakh. Then a path-breaking New Education Policy was approved by the Union Cabinet in July 2020. This was followed by even more path- breaking reforms in the agriculture and labour sectors.
During this period, the Congress party was hell-bent on committing political bara-kiri.
Not including all of this would not be justified. But there has to be an end at some point. Modi and Congress will keep going on, but I will not include any new occurrences after 31 Jan 2021.
This book is partly the story of a 502-year-old boy'. He has still not matured fully, some of his party colleagues say.
"Now, I want to tell you something emotional, something from my heart... This morning, I got up at night," he said in Feb 2014.
In Oct 2016, he said in Firozabad, UP, "You all are demanding a potato factory in your area, but you should understand I am an opposition leader. I cannot open a potato factory." [English translation of Hindi speech]. In Sep 2017, he said there are 546 seats in the Lok Sabha. In reality, there are 543, and any MP should know this.
In June 2018, he said, "Coca-Cola company ko shuru karne wala ek shikanji bechne wala akti tha... America mein slikanji bechta tha paani mein chini milata tha." (the man who started The Coca Cola Company was a lemonade- seller in America who used to mix sugar with water).
In the same speech, he said, "Ford company ka naam suna hai? Mercedes company ka naam suna hai? Honda company ka naam suna hai? In teen companyon ko kisne chaloo kiya? Kaun tha wob? Mechanic tha, mechanic." (have you heard of Ford, Mercedes and Honda? Who started these three companies? Who was he? He was a mechanic!).
In his 2020 memoir A Promised Land, former US President Barack Obama wrote that this man has: "a nervous, unformed quality about him, as if he were a student who'd done the coursework and was eager to impress the teacher but deep down lacked either the aptitude or the passion to master the subject."
Yet, his mother loves him so much that she is willing to give up her family's 'crown jewel' for his sake. Surprisingly enough, even his main political opposition party-the BJP-loves him, as he ensures their victory in election after election.
