This book starts with a noble dream: "Imagine a beautiful city..." Reading these first lines, you might think impatiently: "Well, here comes another dreamer..
Far from it, dear reader! Cities of Light is not "wishful thinking" at all, not a beautiful castle in the clouds, which by tomorrow is already forgotten! Swami Kriyananda proposes and lives for high ideals, oh yes. But the greatness of Cities of Light lies in its practicality. It is grounded in profound knowledge of human nature, an insight the author has gained from a life-time of guiding people. Kriyananda's lifelong question concerning his communitarian ideal has been: "Does it work?"
And yes, it does work! You will read about an existing community, Ananda, which has been around happily for thirty-five years. Sometimes the author jokingly says: "I think Ananda is the best-kept secret around." Only few know about it, beautiful though it is. I myself have lived in an Ananda community in Italy, called Ananda Assisi, for the last fourteen years.
