The present book is the result of judiclous use of information on ancient Hindu calendar derived from the study of epic; puranic; ancient Indian astronomical literature and properly verified by the various modern scientific disciplines: astronomy; & Climatology etc. The brief survey of Hindu calendar is given in Chapter-I of the book which is arranged in 8 chapters. The following chapter is planned to remove the misconceptions regarding the Indian eras including traditional Kaliyuga era. The 3rd chapter which deals with the various views regarding the date of Parikshit II is balanced and informative. The fourth chapter explains the gap of 300 years between Parikshit II and Janamejaya III which appears almost logical. Chapters V; VI; VII & VIII make effort' to fix the chronology of north Indian kings from Parikshit II upto the Ashoka Maurya in the light of new dates for various Indian eras proposed by the author and ample of Puranic; Buddhist; Jain and Greek data.
The work is quite original, displaying erudition and acumen of a remarkable type. Statements are based on definite authorities. Conclusions are drawn on the basis of complete and accurate references. Author's approach of analysing our ancient chronological view in the light of most recent findings of Astronomy and Geophysics is unique. His efforts to establish the validity of Hindu calendar on the basis of modern scientific theories is certainly a valuable contribution to our historical knowledge. The arguments put forward by him to support his theories are convincing and Impressive. There are useful chronological tables; an exhaustive index; self-definitive line diagrams and detailed bibliography.
Dr. Rai Gyan Narain Prasad was born on 5 September, 1948 and basically trained as Science graduate from Gorakhpur University in Biological Sciences in 1971 and joined his services in North Eastern Railway in Telecomm. Deptt. He evinced keen interest in the history of India's hoary past even during his student life. He Studied deeply Astronomy: ancient & modern; Palaeontology: Geophysics and Climatology etc. He took one of his postgraduate M.A. degrees in Philosophy and another one in Ancient History, Culture & Archaeology from Gorakhpur University. He wrote a large number of outstanding research papers and his most remarkable paper entitled 'Gradational Structure of Universal Time - A Scientific Resurrection of Ancient Hindu Calendar' appeared in 1980. After its publication, he was flooded with congratulatory messages from scholars all over the world. They all congratulated him for the excellent work done by him in throwing new light on many aspect of Hindu Calendar and chronology of India which till then were shrouded in mystery. He was invited to Italy; W. Germany; England; R. O. C. and U. S. A. to lecture on Scientific Indology. Recently, Magadh University awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.
The Scientific Resurrection of Ancient Hindu Calendar done by me, is based on the Astronomical Theory of Ice-Ages and modern Cosmology. After getting a considerable success in my efforts, I have now focussed my attention in the present thesis to the chronology of the political history of Northern India from the birth of the Parikshit II upto the coronation of Ashoka Maurya. The former was, chronologically, best known figure to the traditional history and calendar of Ancient India whereas the latter is, chronologically, best known figure to the systematic history and epigraphs of ancient India.
For chronological reconstructions, we equate 9090th year of Dhruva-samvatasara i.c. Polar era and 3030th year of the third cycle of Saptarishi era given in Vayu and Matsya Puranas, with 582 A.D., and can start the Krtayuga of Vaivasvata manvantara with 8508 B.C. with which the geological holocene epoch roughly began and related to a traditional flood event of Manu Vaivasvata. If we equate the 'Dharma-păda' structure for the present chaturyuga given in Surya Siddhanta 1/15-17 with the either direction of the average global temperature fluctuation within 6°C, plotted recently by Profs. G.H. Denton and W. Karlen, for holocene's little Ice-age cycles, then we can easily decode our ancient Hindu chaturyuga calendar atleast for the present Vaivasvata manvantara, in climatological terms. In this chaturyuga calendar plan, present Kaliyuga with which we are related chronologically in this thesis, began precisely with 1308 B.C.
