Chronic Renal Failure is a major non communicable disease in India causing considerable morbidity and mortality causing a great economic loss to the country. The CKD stage 5 is termed End Stage Renal Disease, that is irreversible as per Modern science for which Renal Replacement Therapy is the only treatment. Dr. Sarita Gaikwad has carried out a fundamental research and proved that ESRD is no more irreversible. A CKD stage 5 person can attain stage 2 which was unprecedented. She used 13 herbal plants in various forms that have given boost to failing kidneys and kidney function was restored. 'Chronic Renal Failure and Ayurved’ is one comprehensive book that throws light on Modern concepts of C.R.F., RRT, iatrogenic kidney failure due to misuse of antibiotics and analgesics frequently prescribed by modern practitioners The Ayurvedic concepts are based on scientific study with evidence based clinical trial. I strongly feel that, this research should not go unnoticed. It is up to Central Govt particularly AYUSH and Medical Education department to conduct further research, to find out the active principles in these 13 herbal plants so that some wonder drug may be evolved for the benefit of millions of sufferers of CRF. I congratulate my brother Pradip and sister in law Dr Sarita for bringing out this book for the benefit of students and doctors of Modern Science and Alternative school of Medicine.
It gives me immense pleasure and a great pride to present this book for the students of Modern medicine and particularly for the students and practitioners of Ayurved. The prevalence of Chronic Renal Failure (CRF) is constantly increasing and has attained enormous proportions due to unprecedented increase in metabolic syndrome that encompasses hyperglycemia, hypertension, dyslipidemia and obesity CRP has become a silent epidemic and fate of patients suffering from End Stage Renal Disease/CKD stage 5 is gloomy. For survival of life, these patients have to be placed on Renal Replacement Therapy (RRT) consisting of options of dialysis or Renal transplantation Renal transplantation is a better option but in India, only less than 4% subjects are fortunate enough to avail this option; others prefer for dialysis, particularly Hemodialysis in India but the blatant truth is that majority of them discontinue it within 3 months of its initiation due to financial reasons; they prefer to die rather than putting their family in to financial crisis. The fortunate ones undergoing renal transplantation also suffer financially as well, because they have to be permanently placed on costly immunosuppressant like Cyclosporine. Further incidence of diabetic nephropathy occurs faster in diabetic subjects undergone renal transplantation. The survival rate among them is also not satisfactory.
I myself have lost my very close friend due to ESRD when I was working as Panchakarma vaidya in Government Ayurved College, Nanded. That was a great blow to me but that was a turning point in my life. Since then I constantly pursued my research to treat kidney failure cases and treated thousands of such cases successfully. I purposefully selected my research topic for Ph.D. under Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik on "Evaluation of Ayurvedic management of CRF". I am most happy that I could complete this study with a great success. However I wish to bring out my research work in the form of this book so that this knowledge percolates to students and practitioners of Medicine and Ayurved. This research has firmly established that ESRD is not irreversible (as) against the belief of Modern science), with evidence of shifting of CKD stage 5 to stage 4, 38, 3A and even 2. Ayurved has ability and strength to revive the failing kidneys to bring back to its function. This book has further established that if we detect CKD at an earlier stage like 4 or 3 B there are bright chances that kidney function will be revived.
There is no cure for CRF as per Modern medicine, when it reaches CKD Stage IV & V. Hence it was needed to develop a line of treatment that will treat these cases successfully and restoring quality of life. Ayurvedic treatment is cheap, easily administered, highly acceptable which will infuse a ray of confidence for life amongst those 90% poor patients who cannot afford to take the lifelong dialysis treatment & not to mention about the scarce availability & high cost of Kidney transplantation, which is always out of reach of most of these subjects.
