From The Book
Chitralakshana
Is the title I have given to the story of Indian painting which I have written for you. It is a story and not a history. For, when our forefathers painted pictures they never put down dates. So I have only talked of eras-'prehistoric', 'Gupta', 'Medieval', etc. all dates of paintings and sculptures are guess-work. And your guess is as good as mine. Words of praise too are not very necessary for paintings. The men who filled large spaces, with colours, lines and figures, did so from love of painting heroes and heroines, animals, birds and flowers. I offer this album, then, for the pleasure of all your big-eyed young, who have the sense of wonder in your eyes
