Chitrakathi is a story that is retold with the help of pictures. This traditional art is cherished by the Thakar community of Maharashtra. The storyteller selects a story from Mahabharata, Ramayana, or 'Puranas. The story is then illustrated with 30 to 50 Chitrakathi paintings. These paintings are compiled in one Pothi.
Storytellers travel with their pothis to various villages. When a storyteller arrives in a village, in the evenings people gather in the temple courtyard. The storyteller tells his story with the help of the illustrations in his Pothi. Storytelling continues into the night. This entertaining program is accompanied by singing and music.
