About the Book
Among various Vargas, the relative importance of Navamsha is universally acclaimed. Astrologers consider it to be just next to birth chart or equal to birth chart or even better than the birth chart. Almost all astrologers use Navamsha and birth chart together to assess strengths of various houses and planets before giving any opinion. In Vedic astrology, Navamsha occupies an outstanding position and draws one's attention for deeper understanding/scrutiny due to its multifarious technique and usage. The additional inputs in the form of scintillating conceps by Jaimini and Nadi system have made the subject more engrossing. The author has tried to incorporate the same in the book. The study of a birth chart gives only the gross (Sthool) indications of characteristics of various houses and planets; while Navamsha offers their detailed (Sookshmatar) values. It is so because a Navamsha is basically equal to both in its size and extent to a quarter! one fourth I pada of a Nakshtra, thereby giving it a stellar role. While a house represents a combined spectrum of 30 degrees, a Navamsha provides a microscopic view of 3° 20' or 1/9 part of a sign only.
About the Author
The author is a mining engineer from "Indian School of Mines" now known as IIT Dhanbad. He has put in 28 years of service in the Army as an Engineers' officer. He is a Jyotish Acharya from Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan. For a long time, he has been pursuing astrological studies as a keen student. His researches reflect his analytical approach to go into the details as an engineer and then he put them across frankly as an Army officer.
The author has earlier written many books (list on front inner cover page) which have been received well by the astrological fraternity.
Preface
The credit for success of Vedic astrology over all other systems available in the world goes in no small way to the system of Divisional charts or Vargas. Kalyan Verma (Saravali 3: 12) opines that Vargas provide complete knowledge of Bhavas, without which it is impossible to take even a step in right direction into the great science (of astrology). The Vargas dispel the clouds of obscurity and hold the key to predictions and delineating a horoscope for deeper analysis. They unlock the hidden doors which refuse to open, even after the astrologer has examined the entire spectrum of variables for analyzing a house.
A normal horoscope is two dimensional, taking into account linear time and vertical declinations of the planets with degrees representing time. The divisional charts are nothing but projections of mind in multiple time zones representing possibilities which might occur in different time frames and giving signals to understand the horoscope in a more meaningful and objective way. The basic concept behind Vargas is that a planet becomes highly potent by occupying certain degrees or division (of a sign) for certain aspects of life.
In Vedic astrology, Navamsha occupies an outstanding position and draws one's attention for deeper understanding/ scrutiny due to its multifarious technique and usage. The study of a birth chart gives only the gross (Sthool) indications of characteristics of various houses and planets; while Navamsha offers their detailed (Sookshmatar) Values. It is so because a Navamsha is basically equal to both in its size and extent to a quarter/ one fourth / a pada of a Nakshtra. Thus while a house represents a combined spectrum of 30 degrees, a Navamsha provides a microscopic view of 3° 20' or 1/ 9 part of a sign only.
Various Paryaya used for this Varga over ages are- Navansha, Navamsha, Luva, Nakshtra-pada (Charan), Bhagyamsha, Amsha, Ankana, Ashanak, Amkabhag, kala, Nandansha, Navbhag and Navamshak. The simple word 'Amsha' without any reference or context also meansNavamsha. A Navamsha covers an arc of 3° 20'. A cycle of 12 Navamsha will repeat after every 40 degrees. So all Navamsha from Aries to Pisces will repeat nine times in the zodiac. The average time taken by one Navamsha to rise in the East is 13' 20".
Navamsha has wider application on a variety of facets of a person's life, but it focuses more about 7th house significations in an implicit way. I have been greatly impressed and inspired by the work of late Shri CS Patel on Navarnsha including the role of various classics and Nadison it. In recent times, Justice (Retd) SN Kapoor has highlighted its importance and usage in revealing the new predictive techniques incorporating concepts of Pushka-navamsha and Vargottam. One has to weigh the relative strength and weakness of cosmic forces that express through planets. It is only the balance of positive and negative forces which will tilt a planetary result from unfavourable to favourable one and vice versa.
The study of Navamsha has attained further glory by Jaimini and Nadi System adopting this varga in delineation of a horoscope. Jaimini's concept of Char karaka, Karakamsha lagna and nadi's concept of Argala, various Arudha pada (most common being Arudha lagna and Upa-pada) have provided new dimension to use of Navamsha. For any event to occur it should be corroborated taking ascendant, Arudha lagna or Karakamsha as Lagna. Again for houses, which do not have any planet posited therein, the house lord is not enough. We should also observe and correlate the Navamsha lord of the lord of the house concerned. Similarly the Navamsha lords of the mid-points of such houses also give valuable clues.
According to Dr. BV Raman, there are about 72 Nadi Granthas written by our sages. Out of these 36 are Mantra Nadis giving details of past lives and 36 are Tantra Nadis, whose predictive methodology is based on disposition of various planets in different signs, Navamshas and in other sub-divisions and form the basis of Vedic predictive astrology. Among these Nadi granths, Dev-keralam (Chandra Kala Nadi) suggests many new concepts and novel techniques about use of Navamsha- Tulya-Rashi and Rashi-Tulycr Navamsha and some other methods not found in classical texts. The Dhruva-Nadi written by Satyacharya and Jaya Muni (but one by Jaya Muni is more famous), is the only book, which is based on scientific, systematic and well-known principles of astrology. It gives a unique method of planetary positions of Navamsha in Bhava- suchak terms as Bhagyamsha, Nidhanamsha, Labhamsha etc.
The book consists of 18 chapters with illustration from 64 charts and 24 tables. I could have as well close the book after six initial chapters wherein I have tried to incorporate various aspects of Navamsha and its various concepts of vedic, Jaimini's, of Nadis, of Ashtak varga and of transit. I have used the chart of Ms Indira Gandhi as standard chart to illustrate various aspects and concepts, because I presume most of the rea-ders are well aware of various incident of her life. But then I thought the book would be incomplete if I do not incorporate the use of Navamsha in delineating each house/ Bhava of the horoscope giving a chapter to each Bhava. I hope I have been able to do justice to the subject.
In preparation of the present work, the author does not claim originality. In fact I have borrowed the ideas, principles and explanations given in many classics and by some of the great astrologers. I salute all of them and seek their blessings. It is not possible to name all of them. However, I am indebted to the encouragement and blessings of Justice SN Kapoor, Shri AB Shukla, Mr K. Bhushan and my teachers. It is also difficult to identify which ideas arose from whom, but the final form has an identity of its own. I have not the least intention to offend any astrologer or the native of the illustrated charts. Inadvertantly there could be a small variation in birth data of the natives. If it has occurred, I offer my unconditional apology. I realize my personal limitations and alone am responsible for any shortcomings, which may come to light.
I am thankful to Mr. Narinder and Saurabh Sagar for their suggestions and extra efforts to get it published on Priority. I am also thankful to my friend Mr. Krishna Kumar and Col. AK Singhal for their valuable suggestions/ assistance at various stage of the work. I can never forget the contribution and inspiration of my ever enthusiastic grand daughters - Monil & Ishita Singhal, who have encouraged and helped me in computer/ internet related works for my astrological pursuits. I do hope this effort would be of interest and use to all those who find the subject engrossing. I would fail in my duties, if I do not show my gratitude towards those who have appreciated my earlier works.
