About The Book

Chandamama (1947-2013), the well- known children's monthly, has admirably used children's love for stories not only to help improve their knowledge, scientific bent of mind, under- standing of nature and people, but also to develop common sense and sensibility.

Many educationists consider these stories as education sans stress. Appreciating this viewpoint, J.P. Publishing house, Vijayawada, has taken up the marathon task of compiling the entire collection into several volumes, with new and more attractive illustrations. The first volume is a collection of stories by Vasundhara, the joint pen name of Dr. Jonnalagadda Rajagopalarao & Ms. Ramalakshmi. The well-known duo has several published works in social and crime fiction (over 1000 stories and 250 novels), and in children's literature (over 1600 stories and 20 novels). Other literary contributions also run over several hundreds, and include film scripts, radio plays, book reviews, analytical articles, etc. They have also conducted a few innovative literary features, prominent among them being 'Sahiti vaidyam'-a literary workshop to help budding writers (Rachana Monthly 1991-2017). They are recipients of several awards and prizes from almost all prominent Telugu magazines and a few literary organizations. They also run a Telugu blog (vasumdhara.com) that contains reviews and updates on Telugu literature.

JONNALAGADDA NARAYANAMURTHY

I was bom in 1942 at Ramachandrapuram, East Godavari district, AP, in a family with literary background. My grandfather, Sri Pulagurtha Ramarao was an Ashtavadhani and "Satavadhani and also a recipient of Mahakavi title. My father Somaraju (given in adoption to Jonnalagadda family), was also a poet of his own standing. Smt. Mahalakshmi was my mother. I grew up at Dowtaiswaram and Rajahmundry under caring grandparents who made my childhood pleasant.

After post-graduation from the Andhra University with first class in 1964, RBI recruited me as a probationary officer and laid foundation to my long bariking career. In 1971, that great institution placed my services with IDB1, then its own wing, supervising industrial development in the country as an apex body.

In IDBI, my career graph grew upwards. I reached the top management position of Chief General Manager and retired in 2003 as the Director of JNIDB, its own training outfit set up for upgrading the skills of its own executives as well as those from other banks and financial institutions in the country. My experience and interactions in the institute stood me in good stead to sharpen my skills needed for a writer.

Writing to Chandamama is a dream come true for me made possible, early, by the encouragement I received from my own younger brother Dr. J. R. Rao a novelist famous by the name "Vasundhara who wrote countless stories for children in Chandamama. Later, it was Mr. Dasari Subrahmanyam a wizard and the main stay working in editorial department of Chandamama whose writing skills took the magazine to new heights in tune with the desired objectives of the promoters.

I am also a regular contributor to the articles appearing under the caption 'Antaryami in Eenadu Daily which deal with subtleties of spirituality, Dharma, and individual development.

I thank the publishers for arranging this translation of stories originally written in Telugu.
