This book is the outcome of my desire to understand the origin and growth of Calcutta as a Metropolis. In recent years there has been a proliferation of historical research on Calcutta. But since most of it relates to the growth and development of the city in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries seldom do we come across a work which looks into the history of the city in the eighteenth century Hence I selected Calcutta in the eighteenth century as the subject of my study and worked it out into a book for general readers who are interested in the early history of urbanization in modern India. My thanks are due to Dr. S. M. Ganguly, Librarian, Rabindra Bharati University, whose service to and concern for researchers have become proverbial in the academic circles of Calcutta. My special gratitude is due to my wife whose patience, understanding and concern for my well-being sustained many a prosaic moment of my research.
