It's lucid exposition are easy to understand and hope that this book will render substantial help to the students, scholars and the readers in general for proper understanding of Buddha's basic teachings.

Prof. Bela Bhattacharya is an accredited scholar in the field of Buddhist Education. It appears from her works that she has dedicated in Buddhist scholarship and Buddhistic doctrine as professed by Buddha. Buddha's life and dedicated nature have enthused innumerable scholars, devotees and religious aspirants that almost the whole of Asia, as if conquered by his ideology. It must be maintained in this connection that the tolerance in Hinduism never created a bit of friction, not only that the most celebrated writer of Kusumanjali has equated Buddha with Siva, Brahman and Arhan. In his opinion all the deities are equated with Hari. It is also worth mentioning that the Buddhist Pithas are invariably situated very near the Hindu temples. It is for this reason that Buddhism is still deeply respected by almost all the Hindus. Pilgrims who go to Bodhgaya, Sarnath etc. pray silently, "it is mine and this is my holy place. I cherish the desire that I may come to this place again with fuller devotion and respect I pray, Prof. Bela Bhattacharya may see her book, printed, published, praised and professed by the people at large.

This publication "Buddhist Education in India" has been funded by University of Calcutta under University with Potential for Excellence (UPE-II) sponsered by University Grants Commission. There are Ten Chapters in this work.

The First Chapter is 'Introduction' It deals with the concept and definition of education. It further deals of Education in India in general, Education in Vedic Brahmanic period, Buddhist Education and significance of the study.

The Second Chapter is the description of Buddhist Monastic Education' It includes Establishment of Buddhist Sangha, Pabbajja and Upasampada in Buddhist Sangha, Origin and Development of Buddhist Monasteries, Daily Life of Monk and Nuns in Monastery. Monastic Education of the Monks and Nuns, Medium of Instruction in Buddhist Education, Teacher-Pupil Relationship, Chinese pilgrims Accounts on Buddhist Education and Buddhist Monasteris as centre of Learning.

The Third Chapter is the discussion of 'Literary and Spiritual Attainments of Famous Monks and Nuns' It discusses about the life and contribution of some important Theras and Theris.

The Fourth Chapter deals with 'Education to Lay-devotees' It describes about prominent Buddhist Lay Men (Upasakas) and prominent Buddhist Lay Women (Updaiks). The Fifth Chapter focuses on 'Democracy in Buddhist Sangha' It deals with Democracy in official works and observing duties, offences and punishment in the Buddhist Sangha.

The Sixth Chapter is the description on 'Buddhist Meditation' It deals with objects and utility of Buddhist Meditation to achieve Spiritual Atainments such as Arahatta and Nibbana as depicted in Pali Literature.

The Seventh Chapter is 'General Education and Vocational Education as depicted in Pali Literature' It describes General Education and Vocational Education, Medical Science and Surgery, the science of Archery.

The Eighth Chapter deals with "Famous Buddhist Universities. It discusses about Ancient Universities of India such as, University of Nalanda, Vikramsila, Jagaddala, Taxila.

The Ninth Chapter is the description of 'Buddhism in Medieval period' It deals with Buddhism in Sindhu and Sauvira, Buddhism in Kasmira Gandhara, Buddhism in Western India, Buddhism in South India (Ancient Dakṣinapatha), Buddhism in Orissa, Buddhism in Central India, Srävasti (Pali-Sävatthi), Buddhism in Bengal.
