A Pupil of Shamkhya philosophy yoga Guru Alarakalama and Vaisesika philosophy yoga Guru Uddakaram Putra, on the day of Baisakh Purnima, attained enlightenment through supreme knowledge (Bodhi Gyana) under a holy Pipal tree. Siddhartha Gautama became Lord Buddha. After that, he preached his first sermon as outlined below.
1) Whole world is suffering from sorrow.
2) There is a reason for sorrow.
3) Suffering can be terminated and
4) There is a remedy for every suffering,
These are said to be the Four Noble Truths (Chatu Arya Satya)
Being liberated from suffering is called 'Nirvana'.
(Sabbe sankhara aniccati yada pannaya passati, atha nibbindati dukkhe easamaggo visuddhiya "This means all rites are everlasting and it is perceived by knowledge to get rid of all sufferings. There are eight straight forward ways leading towards the termination of suffering.
