The Buddhist scholars have left no stone unturned to promote and popularize Buddhism and Buddha's thought among the mankind by means of their writings. The present small work "Buddha and Buddhism" is not an exception to it. It is though, a compilation, yet valuable, as it contains some original and intelligent tracts in it. The contents of the book is important, as it has been derived from the old Buddhist Canon, which is known to the prominent western scholars like Burnouf, Senart, Weber, Rhys Davids, Max Muller, etc.
There are only forty-seven verses divided in three parts containing- ten, twenty-one, and sixteen translated poems respectively under the three sub-titles named as, 1. Rejoice, 2. Samsara and Nirvana and 3. Truth the saviour. The gist of the book as follows:
Lord Buddha has found out the root cause of all the evils, has shown us the path of salvation, dispelled the illusion of our minds as well as, redeemed us from the fear of death. It is He, who has got balm for the wounded, bread for the hungry, water for the thirsty, hope for disappointed and light for those, who are in darkness. Buddha has preached the truth, which cures, the diseases, redeems the prediction, strengthens us in life and in death and it is only the truth, which can conquer all the evils of this world.
I. Rejoice
Rejoice at the glad tidings! Buddha, our Lord has found the root of all evil. He has shown us the way of salvation. 1
Buddha dispels the illusions of our minds and redeems us from the terrors of death. 2
Buddha, our Lord, brings comfort to the weary and sorrowladen; he restores peace to those who are broken down under the burden of life. He gives courage to the weak when they would fain, give up self-reliance and hope. 3
Ye that suffer from the tribulations of life, ye that have to struggle and endure, ye that yearn for a life of truth, rejoice at the glad tidings! 4
There is balm for the wounded, and there is bread for the hungry. There is water for the thirsty, and there is hope for the despairing. There is light for those in darkness, and there is inexhaustible blessing for the upright. 5
Heal your wounds, ye wounded, and eat your fill, ye hungry. Rest, ye weary, and ye who are thirsty quench your thirst. Look up to the light, ye that sit in darkness; be full of good cheer, ye that are forlorn. 6
