Book Description
About the Book
The purpose of publication of this book is to make the work of Ramanathapuram Srinivasa Iyengar, a 20th century composer, accessible to one and all. Following the footsteps of the great St. Tyagaraja, Ramanathapuram Srinivasa Iyengar composed in Telugu language only in spite of being a Tamilian. It is a worldwide accepted fact that St. Tyagaraja composed in a lucid and simple way. Adopting his style, Ramanathapuram Srinivasa Iyengar thus composed kritis in Telugu language only which were easily understood by everyone. His use of the easily comprehensible style in his compositions made him become one of the most prominent composers of the post-Trinity era. His manuscript containing many compositions, texts and notations were in possession of D. Chellam Iyengar, son of one of his longtime disciples, G. Duraiswamy Iyengar. The work of Ramanathapuram Srinivasa Iyengar was then published in the year 1982 by D. Chellam Iyengar in Tamil script only with an aim to make it easily available to all musicians in the carnatic Music field. The aim of the author of this book is to address the non-Tamil readers around the world and a sincere effort has been made to adapt the above book in three other languages. All musical forms in this book contain lyrics in Telugu, Devanagari and English and also have SRGM notations in English. Hope this book caters to the needs of wider population.

Foreword
Compositions play a very important role in the firmament of Carnatic Music. Saint Tyagaraja and his illustrious contemporaries, Dikshitar and Syama Sastry have established an indelible place with their immortal compositions which have come to stay as the staple food for Carnatic music. It is doubtful whether Carnatic music would have retained its present shape of universal appeal but for the solid contributions of the Trinity. Tyagaraja's contributions continue to influence and inspire composers of successive generations till today and composers like Patnam Subramanya Iyer had the great advantage of belonging to the nearby generations of Tyagaraja. His compositions became famous to the extent of earning him the name Chinna (Junior) Tyagaraja. To the generation next only to that of Patnam Subramanya lyer. Poochi Srinivasa Iyengar emerged as a composer of eminence. The awareness for classical music had also expanded extensively during his time of early 20th century. The mother tongue of Patnam Subramanya Iyer and his prime disciple Poochi Srinivasa Iyengar was Tamil but they did not compose even one song in their mother tongue but followed the footsteps of Tyagaraja's Telugu compositions. Unlike many other composers of the earlier time Poochi Srinivasa Iyengar was a leading performing artiste of his times and his compositions are naturally found very catchy for requirements of the carnatic music concert which had got consolidated by the days of Poochi Srinivasa Iyengar. Poochi Srinivasa Iyengar's chief disciple was Ariyakkudi Ramanuja Iyengar who was ruling the roost as a model performing artiste to successive generations of performers.

Preface
Spirituality among Indians, owes its existence to the great poets, philosophers and saint singers who have contributed to its development from time to time. In south Indian classical music ie., carnatic music, the era of Trinity composers (Tyagaraja. Muttuswamy Dikshitar and Syamasastry) is called the Golden era due its unique speciality. It paved the way for further development in traditional and bhakti-oriented music. The Trinity's compositions have always reigned supreme allowing only a subordinate co-existence to the composers of future generations. At the end of the Golden era they had set impeccable standards for the rest to follow.

After the Trinity period propagation of spirituality through music continued with the efforts of the Post-Trinity Composers, prominent among them being RAMANATHAPURAM POOCHI SRINIVASA IYENGAR, whose work is the subject of this book. He is also known as Ramnad Srinivasa Iyengar in the field of carnatic music.
