Biography of Lord Sri Ram with complete Vairagya Sandipani and Glory of His Holy Name —This is an anthology based story of Ram. The book is in two parts— the first deals with Rams life story based on Tulsidas’ works, Vedas, Puranas, Upanishads; and the second part contains the full text and English translation of Vairagya Sandipani, with exclusive verses culled from Tulsidas’ works highlighting the importance and glory of Ram’s Holy Name. This section has verses from Gum Granth Sahib and Ramottartaponishad.

The first part of the book has Ram’s birth charts, mathematical calculations of his life span, manifestation period, exile period etc., the Lava Kush Kand, diagramatic representation of the path taken by Ram to exile, the Ram Chant Manas lake etc. besides 108 Ram’s Mains from Padma Puran.

Goswami Tulsidas (1497-1623 AD.) was one of the greatest poet- saints-philosophers of India who devoted almost his entire literary output praising the glory of Lord Shri Ram and singing the ballads of his life- story, containing an ocean of devotional & philosophical wisdom which have a wide & broad sweep and fathomless depth.

Since his works are in Hindi using local dialect, they are out of reach for Non-Hindi speakers who are prevented from drinking this nectar. Therefore, it was felt that an humble attempt be made to compile an English Version of his major selected works which are (i) Vairagya Sandipani (ii) Vinai Patrika (iii) Geetawali (iv) Kavitawali and (v) Dohawali, and prepare a biography of Sri Rain based on them besides the epic monumental work—the Ramcharit Manas (popularly called Ramayan). The uniqueness of this book lies in the ‘Mosaic’ pattern to tell the story by drawing from different sources.

This book is divided into 2 parts, each having separate chapters and appendices, depending upon the subject matter dealt with therein.

In Part A an attempt is made to narrate the life-story of Lord Shri Ram on this earth for the devotees as well as the uninitiated, starting with His birth in the house-hold of King Dasrath of Ayodhya and ending with His being crowned King of Ayodhya on return from 14 year exile.

For the purposes of basic narration, verses have been culled and selected from his Major Works and grouped under various chapters only those verses which are specific for the purpose of telling the story and without unnecessary philosophical, devotional rhetoric and extraneous s embellishments have been included.—so as to complete the story using ‘Mosaic of Verses’, as it were.

Those incidents which are not directly linked to the story-telling purpose of Rams life have been excluded from the narrative because the purpose here is not to present a translation of the epic in its entirety but to narrate main incidents using the verses so as to construct a continuous structure—based entirely on Tulsidas works, without using a single extraneous word, phrase or verse and making the Ram Charit Manas as a basic frame work with extensive additional inputs from Geetawali and Kavitawali where they help to add charm to the narrative.

Offcourse, if a part of the verse includes praises, glories and adoration-singing other than the actual narration of the particular incident or excerpt of His life-story, they are included fully (because cutting out a part would adversely affect its charm.)

For the purpose of in vocational prayer, Ram’s 108 Mantras from Padma Purana have been selected. This is Chapter No. 1.

Kag Bhusund’s narration (from Ram Chant Manas) is made the introductory Chapter No. 2 here to give the reader a birds-eye-view of the whole story at a glance.

The system followed by Tulsidas has been adopted here also viz., breaking the entire story into different chapters (Bal-Kand, Ayodhya-Kand, Aranya-Kand, Kishkindha-Kand, Sundar-Kand, Lanka-Kand & Uttar-Kand), each dealing with a phase in Ram’s life. (Chapter No. 3-9)

Chapter No. 10 is the ‘Lav-Kush Kand’; Chapter 11 deals with Sri Ram as mentioned in Vedas and Upanishads; Chapter 12 tells about the reasons why Unqualified formless Brahama took the Divine Form as Rain; Chapter 13 describes the reign of Sri Ram as the King of Ayodhya; Chapter 14 has Rams Birth Chart, probable life span and scientific evidence; and Chapter 15 lists the places visited by Ram during exile.

Appendix ‘A’ gives the author’s own humble views on different topics and is titled ‘Author musings’. Appendix ‘B’ describes the ‘Lake’ consisting of Sri Ram’s story. The final petition to the Lord in the form of two verses from ‘Vinai Patrika’ followed by author’s own ‘AMEN’ is at the end of the book.

In the 11Dd Part (Part-B) of this book there are 2 sections. In the 1” section, a detailed and full English translation with commentaries of ‘Vairagya-Sandipani’ is made. The subject matter covered by this work viz., (i) Attributes of True Saints, (ii) Attainment of Shanti Pad have been further elucidated and supplemented by selected extracts culled from Ram Charit Manas and added as two appendices. In the 2nd section, the topic covered is ‘Lord Ram and Glory of His Holy Name’. For this, a wide swath of verses have been selected from (i) Vinai Patrika (ii) Geetawali (iii) Kavitawali (iv) Dohawali and (v) Ram Charit Manas with flail text and English rendering with commentary. In this section, two Upanishads viz., the Mandukya & Ramottarataponishad have been added to elucidate & add charm to the text. The Upanishads are highly philosophical and authoritative; they elucidate & explain the essence of the Vedas. The Ramottarataponishad, which is part of Atharva Ved, deals exclusively with Ram Mantra as representing the Supreme Absolute, while Mandukya Upanishad conceives and explains the word symbol OM. Relevant portions have been culled and included here to enhance the fragrance of the subject.

By reading and understanding the import of these verses, one surely feels overwhelmed by their warmth of devotion which effuse and engulf one’s whole being, and the exuberance of the Lord’s grace and mercy spreading like the Sun’s rays illuminating the world.

It is an undisputable and understood fact that no one can, and ever, has been able to describe Ram’s story in entirety; each bird tries the sky according to its might, but neither finds the beginning nor the end of it. But if that trial involves Ram’s holy name, then the entire Universe can be traversed by a singal flap of the wing, so to speak, if one has the faith!

In this mundane existence, remembering the Lord in any way and form is liberating. With this conviction, verses from Guru Grantha Sahib and Holy Bible have been selected on the subject and added at the end. The whole attempt is offered at the Holy Feet of Lord God Sri Ram with the hope and prayer that this volume will be beneficial to lay-readers and devotees alike.
