Dr. Sangeetha Menon is at present a Fellow at the National Institute of Advanced Studies, Bangalore. She is a well-known researcher in the field of psychology and has authored many valuable research papers. She has an expertise in consciousness studies vis-a-vis psychological dimensions.
The Indian Institute of Advanced Study is wedded to the noble task of research on fundamental themes of life relevant to humanity. With this objective in view the Institute organises intensive research by its resident fellows, lecturers and talks by eminent Visiting scholars and Visiting professors as well as by seminars, conferences, workshops at Shimla and outside through its collaborative institutes and centres. The Institute has a distinguished record of publication of books, monographs, proceedings of seminars, symposiums, etc. It publishes three journals-Summerhill: HAS Review and Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences and Chetana (in Hindi). These publications go a long way in achieving the aims and ideals of the Institute.
The Institute has launched a programme entitled "Dissemin-ation of Knowledge" under which it publishes Occasional Papers on significant themes of knowledge relevant to society, nation and humanity.
The present paper "Binding Experiences and Epistemologies" by Dr. Sangeetha Menon in this series was presented at a symposium on consciousness organised by the Institute at Bangalore on 18 February, 2002. It analyses the contributions of Adi Sankaracaya, Turicettu Ezuttacchan and Sri Narayana Guru in the context of recent discussions on consciousness studies. It rightly focuses on the major gap between first person and third person approaches to consciousness.
It gives me pleasure to facilitate the learned scholar for her very painstaking and interesting presentation on the problems of consciousness as seen by scientists and philosophers. I hope that the scholars will welcome this addition to the library of consciousness studies.
