Preface
Numismatics as a science and coin collection as a hobby has become very popular during the past two centuries. The study of ancient coins contributed a great deal to the Indian history helping in the decipherment of our ancient Brahmi and Kharosti scripts and bringing to light the names of many unknown ancient kings. The study of ancient coins reveals many aspects of our past and it is true that every coin has a story to tell and some history to reveal. An impressive amount of study has been devoted to Indian numismatics during the past few centuries and this research material is widely scattered in books and journals within and outside the country. It is indeed hard to look for information on a particular class of coins as there are several museum catalogues, numismatic supplements issued from 1904 onwards till 1938 by the Asiatic society of Bengal which numbered forty seven, journals such as Indian Antiquary, journal of the Royal Asiatic society, Numismatic chronicle, Numismatic circular etc. and books on coins to be searched. Hence 'The Numismatic society of India', which was formed in 1910, planned and brought out Numismatic supplements, memoires and then notes and monographs by its members and then started its own journal from 1939 onwards. Numismatic Society issued bibliographies on Indian coins over the years (Singhal 1950; Singhal and Gupta 1952; Gupta 1977; Mangalam1989 and Kulkarni 1991; Raja Reddy 2021).
