Book Description
FOREWORD

This publication, third in the series of a selection of lectures pertaining to Bhāratatattva (Indology) Course, seeks to recapture the seminal ideas presented by eminent scholars engaged by the Centre of Indological Studies and Research (CISR) at the Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture. On a conventional appreciation, it addresses the felt needs of consecutive batches of participants in the ongoing course on Indology. While the core conceptual thrust of the programme continue to be maintained over time, its academic content got substantially enriched with new inputs and fresh insights coming from a whole array of guest speakers, each an acknowledged specialist in one or the other subfield of the vast subject. Consequently, both in variety and in depth, the compilation should be rated as a handy reading material and a useful teaching aid for any serious follower of Indological Studies.

On an even higher plane, the lecture records can be seen as a significant attempt to have a re-look at the available knowledge base and possibly also to initiate reconstruction of the data base where it stands in need of recasting and reinforcement. Also, with some of the missing links getting identified by later research, there was the urgency to incorporate the latest findings in the text wherever they fit in. And this has been done by the Speakers in the manner they thought would be most appropriate.

Finally, as the informed reader must notice, the book follows a structural arrangement wherein the entire cultural, material, intellectual, and spiritual heritage of the great Indian civilization has been meaningfully juxtaposed with focused narratives of the multi-layered changes in Indian Society that happened with the advent of modernity.
