Glories of Bhagavata Purāņa have been elaborately narrated in various scriptures as well as by great Vaişņava ācāryas. In Bhāgavata itself, in the beginning and end, its glories have been discussed. Before Krşņa returned to His abode, He menifested Himself in the form of this transcendental literature in order to deliver the conditioned souls of Kali yuga.
The conditioned souls have been becoming entangled in the bondage of material life birth after birth and in order to stop this cycle of repeated birth and attain the company of Supreme Godhead, one has to engage himself in devotion (Bhakti). One can obtain devotion only by the association of devotees- 'bhaktistu bhagavad bhakta sangena parijāyate'. Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī explains in his Bhaktirasāmṛta Sindhu that Śravaņam (hearing about Krşņa) is one of the most important means to obtain love of Godhead. Thus if one wants to obtain devotion (Bhakti), then he has to constantly hear Kışņa kathā (pastimes of Lord Krşņa) from the mouth of devotees and Bhagavatam is the unique collection of Krsna's pastimes.
Śrīla Vyāsadeva compiled many Vedic scriptures. He composed Purāņas and Mahābhārata. In spite of all his great work, he was not feeling complete satisfaction. Once he was sitting alone on the bank of river Sarasvati pondering about dissatisfaction. He thought, "I have compiled all the Vedas.
