Since the World War II, we find a national as well as global interest in exploring the esoteric religious life and cultural performances of the Bauls. The new media like radio, cinematography, television, tapes and videos have facilitated fast communication of interest in the cultural contents of esoteric traditional cult of the Bauls. This rapid expansion of cultural communication naturally raises the issues: Are new themes, sacred or secular, adapted to the new demands, emerging? Has there been a process of secularization of the Baul way of life? All these issues have been fairly dealt into detail in this book. In absence of any systematic anthropological study, this first-hand enquiry is an essential first step towards understanding a cult group like the Bauls.
