Book Description
Foreword
Ayurvedic Tongue Diagnosis is a book that is about much more than Ayurvedic tongue diagnosis. It is one of the best books ever written on the relationship of Ayurvedic medicine to modern nutrition. I say this from a variety of perspectives: as a holistic physician for over 30 years, as a Diplomat in Ayurveda and a student of Ayurveda since 1979, as a homeopathic physician, as the Director of the Tree of Life Rejuvenation Center, where we actively practice the principles of Ayurveda, Panchakarma and Rasayana, and also as the author of Spiritual Nutrition and the Rainbow Diet, Conscious Eating and Rain- bow Green Live Food Cuisine, all books dealing with the different subtle levels of live foods and nutrition for spiritual life. This book, which is quite excellent, touches on all of these levels in an in-depth way and was a joy to read.

Because of my interest in re-introducing live foods into Ayurveda, I particularly appreciated the in-depth understanding that Walter 'Shantree' Kacera has shown in this area. His understanding of life force and the importance of life force in food is an important part of Ayurveda. He defines life force as the ability to create life. What he points out very clearly is that cooked seed, when you replant it in the ground, does not germinate. Live food seeds do.

In Ayurvedic Tongue Diagnosis, Walter brings in the importance of life force foods on our tongue, through our taste, through the shape and size and color and patterns on the tongue. One particular insight that I found most exciting is the understanding of the subtle levels of Kapha, Pitta and Vata as Ojas, Tejas and Prana. Vata correlates to Prana, which is, in essence, the Chi in the food and also the oxygen in the food.

Live food has a significantly higher amount of oxygen and Prana. The ancient Rishis primarily ate live food, as pointed out by Dr. David Frawley. The reason they ate this live food is because they knew it had more Prana and Prana helps to expand consciousness.

Preface
The tongue shows us the nature of Agni, or the digestive The fire, and after the pulse, is the most important tool of diagnosis in Ayurvedic medicine. The tongue, however, is easier to read than the pulse and so is often a good place to start learning the art of diagnosis. Learning to examine it properly is one of the main clinical skills in Ayurveda and a good means of self-examination as well. Ayurvedic Tongue Diagnosis is the first book on Ayurveda published in the West that focuses on this vital subject. It is an important new addition to Ayurvedic literature that is useful both for those who already know Ayurveda and also for those who want to learn about it.

The author, Walter Shantree Kacera, presents a broad view of the entire system of Ayurveda, including its relationship with Chinese medicine and western nutritional and herbal approaches. This provides the reader with the necessary back- ground to understand the Ayurvedic view of tongue diagnosis and how it compares with other systems.

The book is detailed, well-illustrated and well-referenced, making it a good desk-top guide for serious students and practitioners alike. We look forward to future books by this author, who displays both deep knowledge and original insight in his approach to Ayurveda and to healing as a whole.
