Throughout my childhood, I watched my mother fluctuate between a loving human being and an irrational person. This continued through much of her adult life until she had a hysterectomy in her 50s, at which point she stopped having drastic swings in her emotions and the chemistry of her body. She felt that a great burden had been removed. What was this burden and how was it created?
According to Ayurveda, any disruption, emotional or physical, in your monthly cycle indicates a metabolic imbalance; this is not a disease. This view is not recognized in the Western world by modern allopathic medicine or by society. In fact, the treatment that was given to my mother further imbalanced her and made her has broad emotional swings. The medication also created dependency. The social mores and conditionings molded her mind. These same influences reinforced the negative judgments of her children and husband. In short, what began as a sensitive nature and an imbalance in the chemical makeup of her body became a disease in the eyes of her doctors, her family, and society.
The medical community put her on hormone medication that apparently helped her in some ways for a period of time. Yet these same hormones further aggravated the imbalance over time, so that it became a chronic problem. These hormones also made her dependent metabolically. After a time, her body could not function without these pills. Still, she was troubled by drastic emotional swings, weight gain, and other problems associated with long-term use of synthetic hormones.
The sad reality is that modern medicine does not fully understand how to treat the hormone system of women or men. The scientific research community recognizes this and states so openly. Over half the women who begin hormone replacement therapy (HRT) stop before three months be-cause of unwanted side effects. Yet doctors and the media continue to brainwash women that these chemicals arc a preventive measure against heart disease and osteoporosis and that they will improve their quality of life. However, re-search studies do not support this approach, nor does the actual experience of many women. Their justification for these statements is based on statistical averages that change dramatically depending on the person doing the study and other variable factors. Unfortunately, this approach does support a whole industry.
This book is not "anti" anything, nor am I personally opposed to anything. I have used pharmaceutical products in the past and I may chose to do so again in the future. It is, however, critical in today's society that we look at the motivations of companies and persons in the medical and health industry. It is our health, after all. While your doctor may, in all good faith, be supplying you with information and a product that he or she believes to be therapeutic and safe, that may not be the case. While large pharmaceutical companies may have your health in mind, they most certain-ly do have their stockholders in mind. It is foolish to accept blindly a one-sided version of any medication or system of health. This book is about other options and sources of in-formation. It is about increasing your knowledge. Knowledge brings power-personal power.
The oldest, continually practiced medical system in the world is Ayurveda. During the thousands of years of its existence, Ayurveda has always had a special branch of medicine just for women.
