The Ayodhya movement is turning point in the contemporary history of Bharat

Struggle in three phases

To make the long story brief, the battle for regaining the possession of Sri Rama's birth place which seems to have commenced in the early 18th century was in three phases as explained with authoritative historic testimonies in the White Paper on Ayodhya brought out by the Bharatiya Janata Party in 1993. The first phase was attempts by war and war diplomacy by Marathas to take possession of the place commencing from 1735. That phase ended in 1856, with one more attempt by groups of Hindus in 1934 which resulted in deaths and punitive fines on Hindus by the British. With the establishment of a judicial model under the influence of the British, the legal battle for Rama Janmasthan began in 1855. But the District Judge, an Englishman, visited the spot in the presence of both parties and ruled that it was unfortunate that a mosque had been built on the spot held sacred by the Hindus but as that had taken place 356 years ago, it was too late to address the grievances. He added that all that could be done was to maintain the status quo. The legal battles re-commenced with the installation of Ramlala, on the spot in the year 1949. But as the case was getting delayed, a writ was filed in the Allahabad High Court which regretted that the case had not been decided even after 4 years and directed that the lower court decide the case at once. But the judicial proceedings protracted without any light at the end of the tunnel.
