Astanga Samgraha is a great Ayurvedic text embedded with all the `best' material selected from charaka samhita and sushruta samhita by vagbhata. The sutra-sthana contains the fundamental principles and basic concepts of Ayurvedic medicine and it happens to be one of the examinations going subject at the end of very first semester of RAMS course throughout the country. In Recent years, because of the growing popularity of Ayurveda, many of the students, who have studied in English medium schools, colleges are also opting for GAMS course and because of Non-availability of a student friendly English version of Astanga Samgraha - Sutrasthana arc facing many hardships in grasping the subject matter in true spirit at the entry level itself.

The English translator of this book, who taught Astanga Samgraha-Sutrasthana for number of years at Dr. BRKR GOVT. Ayurvedic College, Hyderabad, knows the 'needs' of modern Ayurvedic students as well their 'Mindsets' very well. Keeping all these in mind, this book have been written in a student friendly language and style.

A number of figures. illustrations and flow charts are incorporated to make the subject more appealing and revealing. In short, it is a value added English version of classical 'Astanga Samgraha (Sutrasthana), especially 'made easy' to the beginners of Ayurveda.

Dr. Shetti Surcsh Babu MD (Kaya Cikitsa) is a Renowned Writer. Teacher, Practioner and Researcher of Ayurveda, for more than three decades. he hails from a Traditional Ayurvedic Family, his rater (Late) Dr. S. Nagabhusham, his grand father were popular physicians of their times.

I have started my teaching career with Astafiga Samgraha Sutra sthana, which is prescribed for first year BAMS course. While teaching I have noticed a peculiar situation prevailing in the first year class room-Most of the students were with blank faces, confused minds, over all there was a strange situation, as they camp from English medium schools, and colleges at 10+2 stage and at EAMCET a Common Entrance Test based on Biology. Physics and Chemistry for admission into MBBS, BDS. BVSc and BAMS etc .Professional medical courses. Most of them were unable to follow the Ayurveda teaching, terminology, concepts etc, as there was a sudden change in their learning environment or class room culture. Added to this, unfortunately the available editions of Astrifiga Samgraha Sutra sthana in Hindi. Telugu and English are not addressed to modern day students needs, aspirations and Expectations, all these factors silently created a communication gap at the entry level of Ayurveda itself and continues to widen further as course progresses on.

I felt that this gap of communication. can be removed or Narrowed down con-siderably, through a well planned and written English edition of 'Astitfiga Samgraha' Stara sthana, and this firm belief forced me to take- up this task of Translation in a simple and readable modern English, especially targeted at GAMS first year stu-dents. and foreign students who are attending different courses in Ayurveda being conducted by various organizations. I hope, that this exclusive edition of 'Astitfiga Shmgraha' Stara sthana, will be "liked" by the student community as well as :reaching faculty whole-heartedly. I request all of them to pass on their valuable comments, critical remarks, suggestion for further improvements etc., to me, so that I can 'carry on' them in to next revision of the book.
