Though there is no dearth of books on Buddhist Art and Iconography, yet the present book, which embodies a comprehensive study of Art and Inconography of the Buddha images, is a book with difference. It deals with the factors contributed to the emergence of anthropomorphic images of the Buddha and their Iconographical analysis from its inception to 8th century A.D. with ethico-Historical background.
Mathura, Gandhara, Sarnath, Andhra, Kashmir and Eastern schools of Art which produced numerous magnificent images of the Buddha have eloquently been dealt. The Iconographical analysis of the Buddha images from western Indian caves has also been incorporated.
About the Author
Dr. Shailendra Kumar was born in a remote village. Having keen interest in Buddhism and Ancient Indian Culture, joined the Departmen of Buddhist Studies, University of Delhi in 1983 as a student of M.A. and did also M. Phill. And PhD from the same Department. The author had also got training in India Art and Culture from national Museum, New Delhi. He has to his credit, published a number of papers in various academic Journals on Buddhism and related subjects and attended and presented papers in various national and International Seminars.
