Book Description
Foreword

This volume is the first among the series of Archives Rare Papers of Historic Importance Occasional Papers of Andhra Pradesh State Archives and Research Institute. In the same series we intend to bring out the selected documents from the District Records, Private Collections, Government Orders (GOs), Board of Revenue Proceedings, etc. It is intended to publish in extenso the facsimiles of the original documents available in this department. Although there is no detailed description of every document, a brief note is given below for each document and a reader is expected to know the language of the document for detailed study.

Almost all the documents are of immense significance in regard to their historical and archival value. They cover the period of the Asaf Jahi dynasty only, especially the firmans, hukms, other royal orders issued by the Nizam VI and the Nizam VII The Official language used in these documents is Persian.

Altogether these are 65 facsimiles in this volume and they are arranged themewise like treaties, grants given to educational institutions, correspondence of eminent peronalities, etc. The social aspect is also covered by including a significant document which is a royal order prohibiting Sati.

It is also the first publication being brought out during the centenary year of this department and it is hoped that the readers would gain useful insights without the trouble of going through the originals. It is also a valuable and welcome addition to the field of modern Deccan History. Thus these occasional papers in an illustrative form would serve the scholars in a better manner and the arrangement of the records in the thematic form would reveal the cohesive and significant role of Andhra Pradesh State Archives and Research Institute.

Introduction

This is the first publication under 'Archives Rare Papers of Historic Importance brought out by this Archives. It contains facsimilies of some selected documents from the Asaf Jahl records which is one of the very important categories of records preserved in Andhra Pradesh State Archives and Research Institute. The Asaf Jahi records cover a period of almost two and a quarter century (1724-1948 A.D.) and occupy more than linear space of 76,000 feet. These records are in perfect series and sequence and throw light on every aspect of life during the period. A few important sub categories of these records are daftar records, secretariat records, far-mans of Nizam the VI and VII and gazettes published by the Government of ex-Hyderabad State. The documents published in this book consti-tute a representative selection from the above-mentioned sub-categories of the Asaf Jahi records. Instead of publishing important and selected documents in chronological order it was decided to publish them under certain themes and under this decision copies of sixty-five documents are printed under the following different themes or units.
