The present volume (South Indian Inscriptions Volume XLIV) contains 553 Tamil inscriptions that were copied during the year 1917-1918. All these inscriptions were copied by the Epigraphy Branch and noticed in the Annual Report on Indian Epigraphy.
I commend the scholarship, enthusiasm and perseverance of Dr. S. Swaminathan, Retd. Deputy Superintending Epigraphist, who left no stone unturned in editing these corpus of inscriptions and subsequently correcting the proofs, checking the inscriptions and other related works. But for his untiring efforts this volume would not have seen the light of the day. I owe a deep debt of gratitude to him for editing this important work on Tamil epigraphy.
My thanks are due to Dr. S. Nagarajappa, Assistant Superintending Epigraphist, Dr. Meka Raghavendra Varma, Assistant Superintending Epigraphist, Ms. Shreedevi Thejaswini, Assistant Epigraphist, and Dr. P. Balamurugan, Assistant Epigraphist, who have assisted in several ways to bring out this publication early.
My thanks are also due to Sri G. Vasanth Kumar, Grade II, Photographer for preparing required photographs in this volume in its present shape.
I record my sincere appreciation to Ms. Lakshmi P. S. computer data operator, for composing the data of Index to the volume.
Last but not the least, I express my sincere thanks to authorities of the Government Central Press at Chennai, Tamil Nadu for the neat printing of this volume.
