Preface

Ayurveda and Vastushastra sciences are not only contemporary of each other but complimentary to each other. Ayurveda had incorporated lot of Vastushastriya concepts like Bhumi Chayanam, Shalya Shodhanam, Dwar Nirnayam, Disha Nirnayam, Plava Nirdharanam, Kashtha Chayanam, etc to ensure the positive outcome. There used to be the "Vastu Visharada' (Civil architects and engineers) in ancient time as clearly indicated in Ayurvedic books while mentioning the construction of Prasawagara (labour room), Kumaragara (Paediatric ward), Rasayan Kuti (Rejuvenating room), Rasashala (Pharmacy). In the Indian history books called 'Puranas' there is reference to 'Deva Shilpi' (Civil engineer of Gods) and 'Danav Shilpi' (Civil engineer of demons) naming 'Vishwakarma' and 'Mayadanava' respectively. Not only this, in Indian Dharmashastra, there is samskara called 'Vastu Pujana' in which home is worshipped with rituals before formally entering in it for residence. Vastushastra is also a part of ancient Jyotish shastra and peoples used to consult the astrologers not only for the auspicious timings of the Vastu Pujana (worshipping the newly built home)' but also for the guidance regarding construction of home as per the rules of the *Vastu shastra (civil architecture). In almost all these sciences there is opinion of consensus over some basic rules that any structure should be above the ground level. Structure should be east or north facing. It should have adequate ventilation for air to move freely and adequate light. All these principles are analysed logically in this book.

In Indian culture, there is arrangement of four types of life phases (Chaturvidh Varnashram) which everyone must go in lifetime. While going through these phases of life, one has to accomplish the four aims and objectives of life (Chaturvidh Purshartha) i.e. Dharma (performing the duties of life), Artha (earning the money), Kama (attaining the sexual gratification and producing the progeny), Moksha (withdrawing from all physical desires and attaining the highest level of spirituality). Out of the four above said Varnashramas, Grihastha Ashrama is one of the important landmark in individual's life. This is the period when individual has to get married and produce progeny. For this purpose, individual needs the home for shelter and security. This home should give individual the desired happiness, peace, health, safety and prosperity. In this context, the observation made in Matsya Purana is noteworthy to quote which says that the family affairs could not be managed without a proper home.
