Although not quite migratory, I have been uprooted often enough, since childhood, to appreciate the resilience needed to adapt to new homes and workplaces. I began writing this book when I was posted in New Delhi, my karmabhumi, and fittingly enough completed it in Kolkata, my birthplace.
The book is dedicated to my erstwhile tutor who still lives in Guwahati (Gauhati of my childhood). I recall, with gratitude, his sensitive handling of a bewildered child suddenly met with societal scorn as vitiligo made an appearance. He remains an important part of my life even today.
Human migration out of Africa and across the continents is a fascinating story and it deserves a book of its own. The recent wave upon wave of human migration mandated by the pandemic is a tragic tale with socio-economic overtones but it is the beginning perhaps of a new melding. That story is quite beyond the scope of this book and definitely it is too early to even begin to think about it.
The animal world is full of amazing journeys the details of which are still being fleshed out thanks to sophisticated surveillance technologies. But it will be quite a while till the last word can be said. Meanwhile, I enjoyed compiling available information and presenting it between two covers. If my readers enjoy it as much as I enjoyed writing about it, my efforts will have been well-rewarded.
